The Machine is Us/ing Us
Today we watched a short video called The Machine is Us/ing Us. What do you think that means? Explain.

I thought this was a very interesting little movie clip. It's really scary how many people use the Internet. But I think it's true, the machine is really using us!
I think that this video means that we are becoming a world full of technology. We are relying on computers and most of all internet more than we ever have. Our technology is growing. It's becoming a lot smarter.
I think that video means that we are the web. Everything we do on the internet teaches the computer more and more. We all type in information and almost everything about our lives is on the internet. We don't gain much from it but the computer gains more knowledge.
I think that people are relying on the web more than ever. The computers are becoming smarter and are being updated to fit the users' needs. People are being connected by the information the internet gives us. This information rapidly spreads around the world.
I think this video means that the computer teaches us a lot of things, but we really teach the computer by programing stuff in to the internet. I also think this video means that we should really start thinking about copy write issues and privacy issues.
I think it means without us the machines wouldn't be the way they are today. They need us to teach it and program it. I think it also means there is a lot we can do on the web and we are becoming more dependent on it.
I think it means that we are becoming more dependent on the internet. I do think its true because now everyone is on the internet doing homeowrk or talking to friends.

I think the movie was really fast and it does mean that machines do need humans to run them but like ourselfs we do need some control on how we use these machines.

I think that it means, even though we created the web, we are becoming more and more dependent on it. I also think that it is scary that millions of people are using the web, but really, it is using us!
I think that "the machine is using us" means that whenever people use computers, the machine learns more about us, and because everything you put on the internet, anyone can see. Because we are dependent on computers and technology, we have to "teach" or improve the computers to make them easier to use. So the computers are "learning" by people getting dependant on the web (???)
The video was very interesting. It showed how we are responsible for the web and what we write on it. It shows how important it is that we are careful what we write on the internet. It's important because so many billions of people are on the web each day! We need to be careful.
Me and Michael J. think this means that even though we created the machine and we control it, to some extent, the machine is controling us. Technology is growing rapidly and and web is turning into a place for people to communicate quickly.
I think it means that each time we put something in the computer the web takes it in as new information causing the computer to be smarter than the human. I think that our computers intellegence is growing at an extremely rapid pace and that we need to keep developing it!
I think it means that we are using the computer for other reasons that are not mabey particularly nessesar to be using and now we are in the computer and instead of us using it it is using us!

I agree with michaela... although the internet teaches us many new things, there is balance because we teach the computer a lot too. katybeth b-1/2 i agree with katie because if you think about how may times we use the computher in a regular day the numbers are pretty high. Once, in the middle of the summer my power when out and i found my self boared out of my mind concidering the fact that i use the computer and tv so much! our world is really revoled around our technoligie! i certenly agree with Katybeth!
I think it means that we are, well (obviously) adding more info to the net, and doing things that make the computer learn more (in fact, I'm doing it right now!) AND (this is alot of stuff!) growing more and more dependent on the world wide web. I.E: We get all the new ON THE COMPUTER!!!! ahhhh! (fyi, Mr. B, I'm in your 7/8A class...)

Becuase hes telling us all these things and not saying that its going to lead to somthing bad. Also he put the video on the computer and used the internet to share the information.
I definetly agree with Edie O. the machiene learns about us, so anyone can see or read anything we put up. We have to "teach" the computers what to do.

You're right about the video being weird. I think that the machine is Us/ing us means that were now extremely technologically dependant. Almost every one has a computer, and connects to the web every day. Just imagine how many people are on the web a day! That kind of thing just makes ou think... I mean, I don't believe in movies, but it's a scary thought just to thinki about how the computer might just take us over. Who knows we might just become computers ourself...
I completely agree with Hannah h and Michaela G! people are relying on the web more then ever, and without machines we wouldn't be the way we are today.We keep getting more dependent on the web.
It's really wierd how most of the comments are about how much we depend on the computer, and on how much the computer depends on us. It's like a circle!!!

I thought that when they said that the machine is using us they ment that every day the internet is getting smarter and smarter and that humans are making thar happen.
Renee, you're right- some people's lives ARE all over the web. Not only do people just post their lives on blogs, but who they are and what they do is also posted through newspaper articles and stuff like that. If someone has a triumph, and it's written about in a newspaper and then posteed online, anyone in the world who has a computer could know about it. People could figure out everything from how someone died (online obituaries) to what you are doing later that day (blogs, xangas, facebooks, scheduals for sports activities....).
I think this movie means that everyday we teach more and more to our computers. Without us feeding them info, computers cannot improve themselves automatically. As we continue to feed computers information, computers become more intelligent, soon to be even more efficient and have more intellect than the human race.
I think your staement is very true. Our world is relying on technology more than we ever have. And in some cases it might be to much. But it is for sure that our technology is getting smarter and that can be good and bad.
To those who mention the speed he types. Think about the use of technology to make the video. Is it possible that technology made the typing "appear" faster than it really was?
I think that this means that everyones lives revolve around the computor and the internet everyday. We have been programming the computor and it continues to get smarter.
I agree with Samantha K. that the more we go to different websites the more the computer learns. I also think that what Mr. Buckley said about the text being made to look fast is also true. I don't think anyone could really type that fast!

I agree with fartun. The video moved really fast and it was hard to tell what was going on. I think that was point though, to demonstrate how quickly stuff can be added onto the web. What do you think?

ReplyDeleteYou're right about the video being weird. I think that the machine is Us/ing us means that were now extremely technologically dependant. Almost every one has a computer, and connects to the web every day. Just imagine how many people are on the web a day! That kind of thing just makes ou think... I mean, I don't believe in movies, but it's a scary thought just to thinki about how the computer might just take us over. Who knows we might just become computers ourself...

ReplyDeleteYou and me had extremely similar comments! Its crazy the amount of people that put in information to the internet and it learns something new right there and then!! But also with the technology growing we're becoming SOOO dependent upon it!! its INSANE!!!

ReplyDeleteRenee, you're right- some people's lives ARE all over the web. Not only do people just post their lives on blogs, but who they are and what they do is also posted through newspaper articles and stuff like that. If someone has a triumph, and it's written about in a newspaper and then posteed online, anyone in the world who has a computer could know about it. People could figure out everything from how someone died (online obituaries) to what you are doing later that day (blogs, xangas, facebooks, scheduals for sports activities....).
ReplyDeleteI think this movie means that everyday we teach more and more to our computers. Without us feeding them info, computers cannot improve themselves automatically. As we continue to feed computers information, computers become more intelligent, soon to be even more efficient and have more intellect than the human race.
