    1. The main industries in Galveston are oil, electronics, computers, automobles, manufacturing, aerospace industrues and agriculture.

    2. Galveston is situated on the Gulf of Mexico 40miles southeast of Houston.

    3. Galveston island was second only to ellis island as an immigration station and is 26% Hispanic, 44% white and 25% black.

    4. Galveston is a relaxed beach town and most people dress casual.

    5. Galveston has a mild winters(lows of 44 degrees) and extremely hot summers(average of 72-95 degrees)

    5 facts on Hurricane Alicia:

    1. During Hurrican Alcia the highest winds recorded on land were 96 mph sustained, and gusts were up to 127mph.

    2. Twenty-three tornadoes were reported during Alicia. 14 occured between Galveston and Houston.

    3. On Galveton's west beach, Alicia moved the public beach boundary back an average of 150 feet.

    4. After forming just south of Louisiana, Alicia drifted westward and intensifed quikly into a category 3 hurricane before making landfall on the west end of galveston island in the early morning hours of Aug. 18 1983.

    5. On the gulf side of Galveston Island, tides were 7.5 feet tall.

    1.It was the only major hurricane of the 1983 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
    2. The first storm that the National Hurricane Center issued landfall possibilities.
    3. Texas's first Billion Dollar storm.

    5. The name Alicia was retired and was replaced with Allison.
    6. It was retired in the spring of 1984.
