Dead Poets' Society-The Final Scene



Describe what happened in the final scene when students were standing on their desk. Then explain what standing on the desks and saying "O Captain! My Captain!" meant.

    Most of the students Mr. Keating had stood on their desks and said "O Captain My Captain" with Todd who started it. I think this meant that they liked Mr. Keating and they wanted him to stay. They also learned and took to heart what he taught them.

    I think that doing thismakes it known that theyu all respect him and will miss him and it was his fault. I think that it was a vidale moment to the movie for them to show there teacher respect

    1) in the final scene of the movie all the students got up and said "O Captain my Captain". Todd started it and i think they meant that they learned from him and wanted him to stay and knew it wasn't his fault for neils death.

    Its meant that they saw Neils death in a way no one else did they saw him not gulty for his death and they still thought of him as there teacher.

    This meant that the students respected Mr. Keating and that they will miss him very much. They stood on the desk because Mr. Keating taught them to do that and they said "O Captain" because that what Mr. Keating told them to call him.

    Todd after Mr.Keating was leaving stood on his desk and said "O captain, My captain".Then everyone started doing it. Meanwhile, the teacher was trying to get everything under control. I think it symbolises todd and the students saying I respect you and no other teacher.

    Todd was the first to stand on his desk and say to Mr. K "O CAPTAIN! MY CAPTAIN!" then most others did. It was showing respect to Mr. Keating and that they didn't think it was right he was fired.

    In the beginning Mr. Keating said that they could all call if O Captain My Captain. they started calling him that throughout the movie. It was kind of a sign of respect and how said goodbye to him.

    In the final scene, Mr. Keating is fired and the students rebel my standing on top of the desks. By standing on top of the desks and saying "Oh captain my captain" they show respect for Mr.Keating and that they would rather be taught by his perspective than a boring teacher.

    This was very emotonal scene and i think that the standing on the deskd and proclaiming o'captan my captin was to shoe that they where still on mr.keating's side and also to show admiration.

    The kids did that because it was part of the poem from his favorite author. they did that to show him their thanks to him and that he was a great teacher!

    In the final scene, the students stood on top of their desks as a tribute to what Mr. Keating had taught them about who they are as an individual. When they said "O Captain My Captain", it meant that they understood Keating, and they knew that Walt Witman was his fav. poet.
