Mr. Keating took this name from the poem "O Captain! My Captain!" by his favorite poet, Walt Whitman. Whitman wrote the poem as a tribute to Abraham Lincoln through the use of metaphor:
- The captain represents Abraham Lincoln.
- The ship represents the United States.
- The rack (which means storm) represents the Civil War.
