1. There are 125,465 housing units.
2. Population in 2000 was 250,158.
3. 10.9% of the population are 65 years or older.

HURRICANE ALICIA
1. first detected on August 27
2. Deadliest weather disaster in U.S. history.
3. Catagory 4 hurricane.
4. An estimated 6,ooo-12,000 deaths occured.
5. Damage cost about $30 million.

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina
1. The first lighthouse on the cape was built in 1803.
2. The lighthouse was replacd by the current one in 1870.
3. The lighthouse is 193 ft. and the tallest brick lighthouse in the U.S.
4. Infamous for being frequently struck by hurricanes that move up the east coast of the U.S.
5. So many ships have been lost around it that the area is known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic".

Hurricane Gloria
1. It was a Category 4 hurricane durring the 1985 hurricane season.
2. The hurricane caused $900 million in damage.
3. The hurricane cuased 8 fatalities.
4. Hurricane Gloria was the first major storm to affect New York and Long Island directly since Hurricane Donna in 1960.
5. Hurricane Gloria's highest recorded winds were 145 MPH.
