1-i read alot more than they say normal adolesects do...
2-wow, old people gotta read more (im sorry i think people 23 and older are kinda old..that'll change when i turn 23...
3-its true i was reading the article and watching TV..sorry

question?

i agree and disagree, i agree because i do somtimes read and watch TV at the same time (mainly during commercials) and i disagree because i dont think much of the media has anything to do this..

BrynM-LRT 7/8 B said...

1.I don't think its true for all adolesents because I read a lot more than they say.
2.while I was reading this it reminded me of shcool reading projects and how I think its sort of pointless for people who do read on a daily basis.
3. I do agree with Aria though sometimes I do homework while I'm watching t.v.

Question: How come college kid's reading levels have dropped so much?

I agree and disagree, i agree cause technology has come a long way and its making people more dependant on electronical things. I disagree cause I think they are over exaggerating how not that many kids read.

T Moor said...

1) i think its true because i read probably less than they said people my age do.
2)yeah, why aren't old people reading much? they have alot of time on their hands and aren't exactly capable of mountain climbing or anything.
3)well, to read this article and post this comment i had to go on the computer.getting screen time.

Why do they need us to read so much? i never read and i'm at a 9th grade reading level. vi was in the top 94% in reading on that explore test. and i NEVER read.

i don't know which way to go, yes computers, TV,and video games are bad for your brain but theres lots of knowledge on the computer, they're mking educational games like that brain game for Nintendo DS. so i could go either way.

1) I think that it would be really hard to concentrate on what you are reading while you are watching TV or listening to music.
2) It is really surprising that nearly half of young adults in America don't read for pleasure.
3) I read a lot more than the average person my age!

Why are reading scores for 9 year-olds at an all time high?

I definately agree with this article. I think that our reading habits during our childhood and early adulthood will drastically affect the future.

ashley e said...

1. I thought that it was surprising that kids our age don't read that much.
2. I actually read more than people my age.
3. I think that it is probably true though that kids would rather watch TV or listen to music, rather than to read.

Why do 9-year olds read more than everyone? Wouldn't college students read more than them?

I agree and disagree. I agree with that kids would rather watch TV or listen to music. Yet, I disagree, because I think that we do read more than they say.

Jacksonc said...

1. I read and listen to music at the same time a lot, but honestly, I've never felt distracted by it.
2. I read a lo more than kids my age.
3. The people who don't read for pleasure in that 18-22 range, that's college and for a good deal of those kids, I don't think they have the time to read for pleasure.

If all this stuff is true, why are 9 year olds literacy rate at an all time high.

I disagree because as I said before , listening to music has yet to affects how I read, and just because kids aren't reading for pleasure, who says they aren't reading. Most of those stats revolve around college kids who probably have to read tons of books and do homework for school.

1. I never really thought that America stopped reading but just changed how they were reading.
2. I did not think that I read much more then the average person now I am starting to think differently.
3. Gee this is not very good!

Question: Was this study only looking at books or books and the internet?

I agree with the part that says the internet is providing mores was to read then just the traditional book because it really is.

3 They should make that article into a movie so I don't have to read it.

Why is the article not a short video on youtube? No one is going to read it.

I agree.

3 Thoughts: I read a lot more than most teenagers. Old people should read more, its good for your health! I read and listen to music all the time, and its never been a distraction.

Why do 9-year-olds read more than college students?

I agree with this article! I love to read, and its helped me open my mind to so many different situations and cultures, and its showed me a different point of view.

I agree, I think we're going too far with tech. and it's really not helping us because everything we've learned so far is because of books.

1- I read a lot more than they say teenagers do

I agree with this article because reading helps you in all areas of school so the reading we do now will affect our future a lot

1. I used not read alot but then I found a book i really clicked with.
2. I also agree that not many adults read unless they have a job that involves it.
3. Not alot of parents are reading unless its a bed time story to there little kid.
Are writers going to lose their jobs because of this?

I do agree with because I love reading and if I find a good book I can sit and read it for hours

1. Three thoughts that came to my head when I read the article was that computers are more popular than reading currently. Alot of school must us computers a little more than reading currently. Reading can be educational, but computers have been known to do the same as reading.
2. Why dont kids read more currently?
3. I kind of agree because computers are kinda popular and kids do use them more that reading to learn, etc.

Mickey S-LRT 1/2B said...

2.it seems like adolescents read a LOT more than they say in the article
3. i dont think its true that people in prison have a reading problem because they are poor. you can go to prison and be rich.

question: how can they be accurate on how much people are reading???

i don't agree with this article becuase i dont think that they are taking it into consideration of how much people read.

if 25 year olds don't read, then how do they get through college?

yes i do agree with this article because alot of things will go wrong if this continues.

2. I am mad that they say only poor people go to jail. Thats like saying rich people dont kill.
3. I think that people should read more and be proud of that.

Why is this articale so mean?

I dont agree with this artical. I think it doesnt consider the people who read for an hour everyday.

Leah S-LRT 1/2B said...

(1) some thoughts that ame to mind were: Why do teenagers score lower on there tests then younger kids. Also what are some of the ways reading has changed. Last what do computers and technology have to do with reading books?

(2) I dont know, because most of the time it helps me concintrate when i read more if i listen to music. im not sure how i do it but for some reason it works for me.

1. I think its wierd that the kids are age dont read as much as 9 year olds who might not even be able to read.
2. I think the school does a good job of quarter reading assingments.

how do text messages engage in learning?

I agree and disagree. I agree because i think that kids have been dependant on electronics such as computers, cell phones, ipods...
I disagree with the information that the article had because i think that kids are age read more than 9 year olds.

Kathleen O said...

1) I feel like a lot more people read more than they say they do.
2)Also, I was surprised that 9 year-olds read more than 17 year-olds, because don't they have more reading assignments for school than a 9 year old?
3)It says that people ages 15-24 spend only ten minutes reading, but I know a lot of people in that age group who read a LOT more than they're saying.
I'm kind of in the middle with this article. I think a lot more people read more than they say, but it's true that TV, music and the media are preventing more people from reading.

joey R-LRT 7/8b said...

1)Three things that come to mind when i have to read the artical are do i really have to read this reading is boaring and why is it
so important.

2)Why???? do kids that are older read lower reading skills some times for there school.

3)I agree with tis artical and its outcomes.

1. I can't beleive nearly half of 18-24 year olds don't read for pleasure!

2. I don't get how people can only read for 7 minutes, if you started reading you should just keep going for like 30 min.

3. Sometimes I read while I listen to music...I guess I never really thought about it before.

1. I wonder why 9 year olds are at an all time high and why they will go down in adolecence.

I mostly agree with this article. I think that we should be reading more, but I also think we can find a good balance between reading and tech, we don't need to completly cut it all out.

Paul B-LRT5/6B said...

1. i read a lot more than normal people.
2.adults need to read more

Jenny W said...

1. I found it weird that some people don't read any books for pleasure!

2. My mom always tells me not to have tv or music on while i study.

3. I read more then the amount they say.

Question: Why is it that 9 year olds reading level is so high?

I agree with the article because i know that the techniques we use for reading will most likely be the ones we use our whole life. I also think electronics take away from people reading or it distracts us while were doing assignmeants.

Nikki L-LRT 7/8B said...

Thoughts;;
1. i think it's true, you do read better if you read.
2. but even though this is true, people are just too busy and it's not that fun to read, so with their spare time they do other things.
3. you can get the same information from tv that you can from books but faster and without thinking as much. But i don't think that books should be just tossed aside because they are useful and sometimes fun.

I dont have any questions.

Yeah i agree, we do need to read more, but we should find a way to make it more fun, considering it has to compete with wii's, tv, and ipods for people's spare time.

Emily E LRT 5/6B said...

3 thoughts:
1. it's kind of sad if you think about it that people who actually like to read are being put down by the technology we're inventing.
2. teachers should make us read more in middle school so that the percentage of teenage reading could go up.
3. It's surprising how they say teenagers my age only read 7 minutes a day, when I usually read for 35 minutes.

1 question that I have is that isn't readinig a book and reading an article on the internet the same thing as reading SOMETHING???

I disagree with the article because technically, computers and other technology is just increasing our knowledge and our reading ability by giving us more to read...rather then just picking up a single book, we can find any book somewhere on the internet!

Camille P 5/6B said...

1. I don't read as much as the normal adolescent.
2. I watch TV while I do homework.

2. I agree with the only reading a little for pleasure in teens.
3. We should be reading more!!

1 question is what about our age reading level? is it above or below average?

I agree and disagree. I personaly dont' watch tv or listen to music while reading but I know alot of people that do.

1. Three thoughts that I had were...
a. Reading is really important to everything. It's kind of like not having communication. You have to depend on reading.
b. Teens are really disrespectful to reading. I noticed that it was only teenagers that were having problems with reading, not adults or younger kids.
c. I thought that the information was a little false. I know a ton of people who read for pleasure. That's including me.
2. Question: If we continue on this way, will reading totally disappear after a few decades or something?
3. I don't really agree with this article. I think a lot of people still read a lot. But then again, I think it is true that a lot of teens don't really read, or read while watching TV and doing other things.

Kali K LRT 5/6B said...

3 thoughts:
1. I was surprised that people read alot less
2. Lack of reading can effect the economy and the media
3.I can beleive that it's true for kids not to read much just with all the advanced technology and other forms of entertainment.

1 question:
Why is it always the younger 9 year olds that have the higher reading scores?

I agree. I think that it's true that reading helps our knowledge and understanding in all areas of intelligence and that it will become a big part of our life and of our future.

Anna L LRT 5/6 B said...

1.- I read a lot more then they say adolescents read.

1) I read for fun a lot, so I'm in the half that does read for fun.
2) I didn't realize how much not reading can affect society.
3) I was surprized that even half of teenagers read for fun.
How much does the average eigth grdader read?
I think it could be important for kids to read more because it can help us learn. I also think that as time changes, so do people's habbits.

Nico A 5/6B said...

1: I think pressure from school sort of makes us not want to read as much.
2: Teenagers are getting addicted to TV and stuff.
3: I think we read more than they say, we just don't really take it into account. Some people they interviewed probably weren't exact.

Why haven't we heard about this more before?

I definately agree, because I think we have waaay more side distractions like TV and computer stuff.

Does reading articles and stuff on the computer count as reading or not?

Chris B.-1/2A said...

oh yeah, I agree and disagree. I read a lot, but I think reading is essential to our everyday life. We do almost everything reading.

I don't really have any questions.

I don't think our society is going to fail because we arn't readding as much. New technologie, so there for new ways of living and new ideas.

1. I wouldn't say that I read 7-10 minutes a day for pleasure. I don't have the time!
2. I know a lot of people do it, but I don't know how they pay attention to reading while watching tv. I have to do one or the other.
3. I don't think it' s that kids don't want to read for fun, I think they just don't have much time between sports and homework.

1. Why do adults read so little too? They probably liked books a lot when they were kids because they didn't have all the technology.

I agree because I think that kids aren't reading as much because of all the technology. I would disagree with the numbers and statistics they gave though. They seemed unaccurate.

Thoughts:
1. I think it is sad how the reading rate is diminishing.
2. I read more than the average person my age!
3. I find that multi-tasking while doing homework is very difficult.

Why are 9-year olds getting such high reading scores now?

I agree and disagree with this article because our diminishing reading habits will definately affect our futures. I disagree because many of my friends and myself read a lot for pleasure, so I think that the average for our age may be a little off.

Joe N-1/2 A said...

1. I read a lot more then the average adolescant does.
2. I have never thought about how much easier teaching must be with all this new technology. In math class sometimes we use some internet software to understand the lesson better.
3. It is hard to believe that reading has dropped so much in the last 40 years.
Where are they getting that data? In edina almost everyone I know reads a lot more than the standards.
I mostly agree because reading is important to getting smart and having a good education. We need a lot of smart people in the world to solve important problems.
