CBS News Story About Types of Messages and the Presidential Race

Remember when we examined types of messages (verbal, vocal and nonverbal) in the Communication Module?

On Wednesday, October 3, CBS News did a story about the importance of communication in the current Presidential race. Although the terminology is not often used, verbal, vocal and nonverbal messages are a key part of this story. What is said and the way it is said is examined by experts. Take a look:

Candidates Play To The Heart

One thing that stood out to me in this video is that the first thing that people see is the way you talk and the way you look giving a speech. This shows that nonverbal communication is very important in our everyday lives.

wow, I probably wouldn't have notest the things I did if we didn't have the communication unit. It's sorta funny because in ss we were talking about honesty.

I thought that it was interesting that some people like how the candidates are using "feelings" more than the informational things. Also, I thought that it was interesting how the candidates were using verbal, vocal, and nonverbal communication in their speeches and interviews!

I thought it was a good point that people first see the way a candidate (and that goes for anyone as well) talks and looks when they are in front of people. This shows that nonverbal communication helps when you are giving a speech.

That was very interessing. People look for honesty and apperance. I think its kind of rude to mock someones laugh and judge them by it.

I thought this video was very very accurate. The author (Weston) was talking about how it was important to touch the hearts of voters. Doing that, you need to have all elements of communication, verbal, noverbal, and vocal messages. Also, they thought Hilary Clinton's laugh was a bit over the top (voval message). The video was very trithful as well in the sense that people are going to judge you on how you look and how you hold yourself before you even start saying what you have to say.

Wow. Those senators have it hard. People are making fun of their laughs, their speeches, and their facial expressions. I like that they are spontaneous and honest. This short video has taught me more about communication.

I think one of the main things that stood out to me was that one two tiny parts of the brain really listen to the speeches the canidates make! I also thought it was interesting of the things you could tell about a canidate in the ways they stand, talk, and laugh!

I realized in this clip that voters don't really care what candidates say they will do when they become president, they care about what who touches the heart of the voters the most. I think that whoever can do this will win the election.

Something that stood out to me was that the people realize the way you talk and how you look when your talking. I also noticed how someone said that they don't really care what the canidates say they just kind of want someone that can touch their heart. I also thought it was cool/interesting how the canidates used verbal, vocal, and nonverbal communication throughout the clip.

In the video I learned that the first thing that they look at is the way you talk in a speech.
that shows that speech is importent in life.

I thought it was surprising that Hillary Clinton took it too far with the laughing thing. But, I am not surprised that people will vote for some one if they are able to connect to the person's heart.

Interesting...it was pretty accurate in my opinion but then again it was waay off in some places too. but also they quoted comedy central so that makes it only 20 times better!

One thing that really stood out to me was that people recommend presidential electors to make speeches to the heart, and not just speeches. They have to relate to the audience to connect with them.

People us verbal, non-verbal, and vocal in their lives every single day. you use it over the phone when ordering a pizza, you use it when your showing emotion when your sad about a family member, and you use it when showing some one that you can ride a bike. we do all these things using verbal, non-verbal, and vocal communication with out even knowing it.

Nathan R.-LRT 7/8A said...

I thought that the people judged the candidates on how comfortable they were presenting a speech. The candidates also try to put as much feeling into their speeches as possible, so that the voters could relate to what there saying.

One thing that stood out to me was that people will pay more attention to you as a person rather than what you have to offer to the country

I think the video was interesting. I know now that your nonverbal communication is just as important as your verbal communication.

I think you need to connect with someone in order to vote for them, but it kind of bugged me that we base most of our decision on appearence, because whoever looks best may not be the best person to lead our country.

I think that it shows how much verbal, vocal, and nonverbal communication matter in speeches.

i would say to be a canidate you would have to be honest not a liar, you would have to care for other no matter what kind, and also have reasons for what you are explaining.
