Questions About Dead Poets' Society

Do you have any questions about Dead Poets' Society? Perhaps you are confused about who a character is (Which one is Charlie?) or about something that happened in the movie (Why did Neil read a poem to start the Dead Poets' Society meeting?). Post a question here (or an observation about the movie) and I'll respond to it. Check back periodically and read what people have asked and my response.

Hello!

My only question is, when they are in the cave, and the cave is all smoky, are they trying to make a fire to keep warm or is it a ritual?

That's a good question Svea. Based on the fact that this scene takes place in the fall, they are wearing coats, and it's at night, I'm guessing that the fire was primarily to keep warm. Unless Mr. Keating told them that there were fires at DPS meetings (which based on the film Mr. Keating never discusses DPS after the initial conversation with the old yearbook), the boys would not know of such a ritual.

QUESTION!!!Does anyone die other than the fool who commits suicide?

If I answered your question Aria, it would spoil the movie. You'll have to watch and find out.

I would have to say that my favorite character is Mr. Keating. He displays so many great qualities of a teacher. He's interesting, engaging, funny, hardworking and honest. He also connects with his students to teach them important educational and life lessons. Of course, Mr. Keating is a fictional character, but I admire a lot of things about him.

If I had to pick a student, my favorite character would be Todd. I can't give reasons now as it would spoil the movie, but I definitely would pick Todd.

I don't understand exactly what the Dead Poets' Society is. What's the point of it? Do they just read poems the whole time?

Jon Buckley said...

NEIL doesn't get together with Kris. It's KNOX who is infatuated with her. You'll have to watch the movie to find out!

What is the Dead Poets' Society? Basically, it was a bunch of friends who got together to read poems and discuss the meaning of those poems. It's kind of like a book club. Does that help?

Hey mr.buckley,

my question is what is this movie rated????I mean like back than...would it still be PG, or PG -13????
these are the questions that haunt me!

yeah, it's one of the better movies we've watched in school. actually, i think it's the best movie i've ever seen in school. the magazine part was pretty awkward, though. i think Mr. Keating is cool, very complex-minded. The whole dead poet's society was pretty pointless, though.

Jon Buckley said...

The movie is rated PG, however, I believe it came out before the PG-13 rating was used, so perhaps it would be rated PG-13 if that were the case.

The Dead Poets' Society was pointless? I'm not sure about that. In an earlier comment, I compared the DPS to a book club. I'm guessing most members of a book club wouldn't think their club was pointless.

I'm glad you like the movie and hope that you continue to enjoy the rest of it. My goal is to teach the LRT curriculum by using interesting, fun and informative learning activities. I hope DPS meets those qualifications.

Mr Buckley,
I was just wondering if have to fill out the blog entries for Dead Poets Society,if I am not watching it. I was also wondering when the alternate activityis due.

Jon Buckley said...

David, you do not need to complete the DPS blog entries. When filling in a Blog Log, please check with me about excusing you from those entries. No problem.

Regarding the due date of the research paper, you should plan to turn it in on the day of the Fear Test listed on the October calendar I handed out.

Hi Mr. Buckley!
I was sick today. I know I missed watching the movie. What should I do about that? I watched the little clips on your blog but I'm guessing that those weren't the whole section.

Let me know.

Jon Buckley said...

If you miss part of the movie you can either rent the movie and watch it or get the study guide answers from a friend. Keep in mind that you will have a test that includes questions from the movie and that watching and discussing the movie is an important part of understanding the concepts of fear I have been teaching.
