Drawing Activity

Today you had an opportunity to experience what it's like when the communication process (Sender-Message-Receiver-Feedback-Noise) was broken.
  1. Did you like the activity? Why or why not?
  2. What did the activity teach you? Or what did it teach you (show you) that reinforced what we have been studying?

I thought it was very interesting that we could do that. It was a bit difficult to draw the first time because we couldn't ask questions. However the second time when we could ask questions, a lot of useless questions were asked slowing us up, but we could also ask the important questions. So we can see the way that feedback works.

I really liked that activity. I learned that it is almost imposible to receive directions without communicating. I also learned that communicating takes a lot of detail when you don't get feedback.

I really enjoyed the activity. It taught me more about different types of communication. And it showed that it can be very difficult to comminicate with others when your options are limited.

I really enjoyed this activity. I leaned alot from it and it was really fun.

I thought the activity was fun because you don't normally do things like that in class, so it was something different. From the activity I learned that a message can be understood better when the reciever gives feedback, and seeing non verbal messages from the sender.

Austin W- 1/2A said...

it was fun and got the message across. i thought it was kind of like sherades.it was intressting how conversations change if there's no feedback.

The drawing activity was really fun! It was fun to describe what the drawing looked like! Everyone asked a lot of questions. It shows that its almost impossible to recieve directions without communication.

Feedback can be very helpful, but in the case of 1/2A, it can sometimes be detrimental. The drawing activity showed 1/2A both the positive and negative aspects of feedback.

I loved doing this activity! It was a lot of fun. My family does it all the time when we are bored on road trips. The thing I learned by doing this activity is that communication is key. Without communication, everything would pretty much be impossible.

Natalie W- 1/2A said...

I liked this activity,i enjoyed because instead of you just like explaining it we could understand more that communication needs feedback and is extremely hard to do something with out it.

I liked the activity. I learned that it is hard to sometimes understand with only one way communication, but when able to give feedback, it was easier to become more specific and understand a little better.

I liked it. It was a fun and interesting way to understand that communication is definetly important:-)

I really enjoyed that activity because of our participation. I learned that without a clear message it is hard to give accurate feedback. I also learned that when you combine verbal and nonverbal communication, the message is easier to understand.

I really enjoyed this activity because it got us really involved. The activity taught me that it's really difficult to communicate well when only one person is talking and no one is giving them feedback. It became a whole lot easier when we could ask questions.

Ariel L said...

I liked the activity because it taught me that you really have to be descriptive when talking about something the other person doesn't know about. If you're on the phone helping someone with homework you must be very descriptive when telling them about it.

I really enjoyed the activity. I learned that depending on who the sender is, it can be easier or harder to draw what they're describing. Personally my drawing was better the first time because the sender did a better job of explaining details. Also no-one was talking so it was easier to hear and focus.I also learned that feedback is important because it can help clear things up that the sender says. All in all the activity was great and I learned a lot from it.

The drawing activity was really fun! You had to be very specific for people to know what to draw the first time when you couldn't give feedback. The second time though, it was a lot easier because we could ask questions and make comments. It reminded me a lot of charades and how it can be very hard!

i thought that the acticity we did in class was interesting..i was one of the speakers and i had to stand behind the door, i have to say it was hard to try and descride every little detail to the class, and it was easier when timmy got up and we got to ask him questions. I thought that this was a good expierence to show different types of communication.

michael 7-8A said...

it was interesting to find out that it is nearly impossible to recieve directions without being able to ask quetions.

Jackson K1/2A said...

I thought it was a really fun activity. It proved that different people interpret a messege in a different way. Sometimes you need to use a lot of detail to get your message across.

Evelyn H-LRT 5/6A said...

i loved this activity! it was so fun, our class laughed sooo hard! It was cool to learn about how hard it would be to not have clear communication in life..it was fun to recive the message and give feedback. It made everything so much easier to understand.

Joe N-1/2 A said...

This activity was very fun. It's hard to communicate with no feedback, so you have to use a lot of details. The speaker doesn't even know if the class knew what she was talking about. In the second one where we could ask questions, our class took a very long time. Someone even asked if the arrow was made of wood.

Maggie W! said...

I thought it was very interesting that we could promote so much feeling by just pointing, and making a face. I also learned that when you can't feed back in a conversation, you have to supply a lot of detail.

Julia H-LRT 5/6A said...

I personaly really enjoyed this activity. It gave the information you gave us some real life meaning. It showed us that when you can not see the speaker you might get a diferent meaning out of the message.

zoe m lrt 7/8 said...

i thought that, that activity was a very good example of a time when you would need good communication. That activity just shows how important feedback is to be able to understand correctly.

I really liked the activity because it was both fun and somewhat challenging! I thought the first time was really kind of confusing at times because we couldnt ask, "How big is the star?" or anything else, plus the speaker wasn't allowed to use gestures, so the speaker often had a hard time conveying the message and the audience had a hard time understanding alot of the time. I also think that the activity reinforced what we have been studying about how we use the 3 kinds of messages instinctively all at the same time.

It was a fun, different activity. The drawings weren't to hard. I still got the sizes wrong though. I hope I get my password right this time.

I really liked it. It was fun, and it showed us how hard it is to teach something without being able to leave feedback.

I thought it was really fun, and I hope to do it again. It was tough at the start, because I didn't get it, but it went fine. It was also tough because I can't draw at all! I learned that without verbal communication, life is almost impossible. It be really tough to be a mute, because I would hate having to symbolize everything with my hands.

Thanks,
Chris,
GO COLTS!!!

I thought the activity was pretty fun. It showed how important it is to explain to people discriptively. I'm pretty sure that if we were unable to give the location of the objects, this activity would have been impossible, and it shows how important directions are in life.

i thought that the activity was a little confusing but it got the message across and that was the main point.

I think the activity is good but we've done this at least once every year since about 4th grade in many different subjects. Otherwise I think it was good to hear the feedback about your own speaking. It didn't really teach me much though.

Carly C-LRT 7/8B said...

I really enjoyed the drawing activity. It showed us how feedback has a very influential role in the messaging process. Feedback informs the sender if the receiver interpreted the message correctly. It was a really fun way to learn!

Maria S-LRT 1/2B said...

I liked the drawing activity. I thought that the first one was really hard. The second drawing was easier because we could ask questons. I learned more vocabulary today.

That sure was fun!

I really liked the activity. We did it in the 7th grade too. It's funny to see what people come up with. I learned it's really hard to draw something by just describing it and not seeing the picture.

i thought that activity was really fun.
it was kind of funny to see how even though feedback does help to clarify, it also slowed things down ALOT, although the drawing turned out better in the end. =]

1. I didn't like or dislike this activity. The first time it was hard not to be able to ask questions. It was good that our describer/sender did a good job. Yay Svea!!!

2. What I learned about this activity was that if you don't have a way of giving feedback in the form of a question, you have to really on the sender doing a clear job of explainng their point and there has to be minimum interference.

BrynM-LRT 7/8 B said...

I thought the activity was fun. But I think it was also a lot harder when we couldn't ask questions.
During this acitvity I learned how hard communication is without talking. I also learned that although we use talking as one of our main communications we also use the other ones to.

I liked the drawing activity because it was fun and different from what you would normaly do in a class. It taught me how important the feedback part really is.

It was a fun activity. I learned how detailed you have to be when sending exact instructions. I also learned how it is so much easier to recieve exact instructions if you are able to ask questions.

Sophie N LRT 5/6b said...

I thought it was fun. It was a bit harder when the class was asking questions all at the same time. I learned that you have to concentrate a lot when people are talking and that its easer when the class is silent.

Danielle S-1/2A said...

I've done this activity in other classes in 6th in 7th grade, but I accuatly do injoy doing it. It's great to see what everyone comes up with.
The first time threw the activity it was hard because we couldn't ask any questions/ give feedback. Even thought Natalie did a really good job explaining what to draw. The second time threw was MUCH eaisier because we could ask questions.
I learned that I really need to lisen well when I'm not able to give feedback or I will get confused. I also learned that a good conversation should have feedback so the reciver doesn't get confused, and could understand what the sender was saying more easy.

Maddie D said...

I thought it was really interesting that it was harder to explain how to draw with out using motions. One thing though is that some people didn't have the right vocabulary to explain it easier. But it helped by showing how to draw it with the motions he gave us.

Jenny W said...

I really enjoyed the activity! I thought it was interesting because the person that we were unable to give feedback to did a better job at describing the picture then the person we were allowed to respond to. This could have been a difference in people and there describing methods or that the feedback was interference for the message. It also gave us less time because the sender had to reply to the questions being asked! I though this was a fun and interesting way to learn about communication.

Nico A LRT 5-6B said...

I learned that without feedback, the sender doesn't know any of the problems with what they are communicating to us. But when there is feedback, we can state confusing things and get solutions.

Joey said...

I thought that the activity was fun. It is something that we usually don't get to do and it is different. The activity taught me that communication is complicated. It has so many forms.

Hi Mr. Buckley!

Even though this drawing activity was kind of short, i still really liked it. I liked it because it showed that some people interpret words and directions different than other people. I never knew it could be interepreted in so many ways!

I thought that the drawing activity was fun. When we couldn't talk, it was harder, and when we could talk, it was a bit easier. I learned that you need to be extremely accurate in describing when you can't get feedback.

I liked the activity because it was a game that also taught us about communication. It was much tougher when we couldn't talk. It looked hard for the person describing the pictures because people couldn't ask questions. It was much easier the second time.

I really enjoyed this activity. It proved a great point about how when communicating, feedback can be very effective. Also, this was a fun and different way to learn in class.

Emily E LRT 5/6B said...

I thought this activity was very interesting because it's a different communication then we're used to. We're used to seeing the picture and being able to copy it by looking at it, but when someone describes the picture it's much harder. I also liked this activity because it was hands on and fun. Much more fun then listening to the teacher talk! I learned that it is a lot harder to receive directions without clear communicating.

Kali K LRT 5/6B said...

I found the activity challenging. I learned that the world would definitely be harder to live in without the different forms of communication. It can be tough to understand one person's message without giving any feedback or sending another message in return.

T Moor said...

I thought the drawing activity was fun because i love to draw. Also it was fun seeing how two people can describe similar things quite differently.

I thought that the drawing activity was really fun! It was nice to just have a break from usual work and do an activity like that. It showed me that sometimes it is better to not be able to communicate and just listen to what that person has to say. The second round was slow because so many people asked questions.

Anonymous said...

I really enjoyed the activeity. It was kind of hard when we could not ask questions because we had no way to verify what we know. I learned the more ways you have to communicate the more clear the message will be.

Elena T - LRT 7/8B said...

I thought the activity was fun. I learned a lot about the different types of communication. It also showed me that its not always easy to communicate with others. Feedback benefits the sender and receiver, which I thought was interesting. It was fun to see how people described things when they couldn't show you with their hands or facial expressions. It shows how communication is much more than just talking.

Anna L LRT 5/6 B said...

I enjoyed the activity. I thought it was more fun describing the picture than trying to draw it myself, it was a lot easier. I agree with renee. Without communicated it is A LOT harder to interpret the message the sender is trying to give, non-verbaly
