Star Tribune Article Says Minnesota Students Are Above Average

Today's Star Tribune had a story about how Minnesota students compare to the rest of the nation in reading and math.

Minnesota's kids are really above average Star Tribune Article

This test was given to a small set of kids but it is supposed to represent our entire state. Assuming the results are accurate, comment on the following questions:
  1. How does this make you feel about what you are being taught? Does it make it seem worthwhile?
  2. Do you think we can do better as a state? Do you have any ideas about what might help us improve reading and math skills?
  3. Do you think you are better prepared, worse prepared or about the same as other schools in Minnesota? Why?
This is an optional post. Post a comment and print it out. Turn it in to me during class on Thursday or Friday this week and you will earn two bonus points.

1) Reading this article, makes me feel really great about what we are learning in school. It makes even the subjects that I don't like doing seem worthwhile.
2)I think that until we become number one in the nation in all of the subjects, there is always room for improvement. I think that if we spent more time in class on reading and math, those skills would improve.
3)I definately think that we are not as well prepared as some of the other Minnesota schools. I don't think that we are getting as much exposure to technology as some of the schools in our area.

This article made me feel good about what I'm being taught, and made it seem worth it. Yes, I do believe we can do better as a state by making sure that we spend more time on those subjects than others. I think that we are better prepared than other schools in most subjects, because we have teachers who teach us a lot and have a good curriculum.

I think that it's good to know that what we are learning in school is ranking us in the top places in the Nation, but there is some room for improvement. I noticed in the lower grades they were not any results as for the higher grades(8th,6th) there were very good results, mainly in reading and math. I think if the lower grades focused on reading and math and possibly the higher grades as well, we will have the top spots in all the grades. Lastly I think our school is being opened up to more technology, but we should try to catch up with some of the other schools.

1. This article really makes me feel proud about what we are learning. It definitly is worthwhile. It gives Minnesota a good image, and it will help you in your future. I bet bosses and such would look back at how you did on your MCAs. Maybe not...
2. I think we could do better as a state, because there is much room to improve, and we have a lot of time to get up there. However, I do not have any suggestions on how to get there other than what we are doing now for preparations.
3.I think we are better prepared in other schools than others, but then there are also other schools that are better prepared in other things than we are.

I believe this article shows that we are doing lots of great things in Minnesota. Overall, teachers are doing a good job teaching and students are doing a good job learning. But there is certainly room for improvement. Together, we must make a commitment to continue to improve.

This makes me feel proud and happy that our state's teachers and students are making the most of school. Sometimes the things we learn in school can seem useless or boring but all of that pays off for all of the things that will help us later in life. I don't know anything that would improve our reading/math skills. I think I am better prepared than other schools' students because VVMS's teachers really do a great job helping us understand everything they teach.

I think thats AWESOME!! Especially the part about 8th and 6th graders-thats so cool! But there IS room for improvement... there isn't any more 'til we're top in the nation, which we can definetly do. We should work more on math and a little bit more on reading... still, we can totally be top in the nation!
