Fewer Male Teachers in the Classroom

Today's Star Tribune did a story on the declining number of male teachers in the classroom.

Mr. Teacher? Fewer men in front of the the class Star Tribune Article

Please read the article and respond to the following questions:
  1. Think of your teachers this year. How many male teachers and female teachers do you have?
  2. Do you think it's important that some of your teachers are males? Why or why not?
  3. The article states that many people think that teaching is a "female profession." Do you agree? Why or why not?

1. I have 2 male teachers and 6 female teachers.
2. I think that is is important to have some male teachers, because kids then know that males and females can teach. Also, some kids might listen better to male teachers than female teachers.
3. I do not agree, because I think that teaching can be for everyone. If you enjoy teaching, then you should get the chance to do it! Males can do it just as well as females.

I have 3 male teacher and 5 female teachers. I think it's imrortant to have male teachers because sometimes they teach diiferent then women. I don't agree that only women should teach because guy teachers are so much fun to have. Plus if teaching is your passion you should have the right to do it.

1) Surprisingly, I have five male teachers and only three female teachers.
2) I personally don't think that it matters whether or not you have an equal balance of male and female teachers. I didn't even notice until now, that I have more male teachers than female teachers. I don't think that kids listen any better to one than the other.
3) I do not agree that teaching is a female occupation. I think that anyone who really cares about kids can be a teacher.

2. I think it's very important to have male teachers as well as female teachers. Like Camille said, male and female teachers sometimes have different teaching techniques and I think it's important to experience both. Also, in the article it said that male teachers can be a very positive for boys. I have had some role model female teachers so I definetly agree with that.
3. I don't really think any carreer should be based on gender. If your a male and teaching is something you love then go for it!

1. I have 5 female teachers and 3 male teachers.
2. I think it's very important to have male teachers because boys interact more with male teachers. They understand and look up to them more than females, just since they're the same gender.
3. No, I do not agree with that statement because males should have the same oppertunity to teach as females. Sure, there are more female teachers but males are still an important part of a students school life.

1.Male teachers:2
Female teachers:6
I do not think it is too important that some teachers are males because the lessons are taught in the same way, but a little bit firmer and sometimes they get to the point too fast. I believe that teaching started with women because they are able to connect and understand children better (mother instinct). But teaching is definitely not a "female profession" because anyone should be able to interact with kids if that is what they would like to do.

Well, I kind of do think female is more of a "female's profession" but i believe standards and stereotypes should be broken.

My male teachers are you, my Latin teacher (only for 1 month) and my math teacher - everybody else is a woman. I think teachers are becoming nicer and nicer compared to the ruler smacking, pigtail pulling image of 50 years ago. I also think that men's techniques don't quite fit the image that we're now forming in our minds and are considered irrational and "bad" because of it.

1. I have 3 male teachers and 4 female teachers.
2. I don't have a preference for having more male teachers than females (or vise-versa). I don't think it depends on the gender for how well a student does in school.
3. I find that people saying teaching is a "female profession" is a very sexist stereotype. If teaching is a man's passion, then I say let him teach!

i have 2 male teachers and 6 female teachers.i think that more teachers should be male because they have better class plans ans they are more than the female teachers plans for the class i have found out this year.i disagree it is a profession for anyone it is not limited to just females.

1.I only have 2 men teachers out of 7

2.I think males have a better ability to teach than women. I don't know, I listen more to a guy that I'm afraid might punish me more than a female teacher.

3.I do not agree. No profession is a male or female profession. I think it leans towards female teachers, because most of them have more patience

1.I have 3 male teachers right now and 5 female teachers.
2. never realy thought about it, i guess their is more girl teachers but i think its because there is more females in the world the males and not many people want to teach, so the probeblity of they being more girls than guy teachers is pretty good adn i dont think any one did it on perpose its just how things are.
3.I think that teaching has nothing to do with gender, and i have no idea why it would matter if there was a girl teacher over a guy teacher

3. I disagree that its a femal profession, if a man wants to teach I say "heck let them teach!" I don't think that should be discriminated against at all!!

I don't think that it is that important that there are male teachers, as long as I keep learnining what I need to learn.

I really do not have an opinion on this subject I mean like i said before It really dosen't matter as long As I learn stuff.

I have 5 female and 2 male teachers this year. No, it really doesn't matter as long as they can teach. Not really, it's just that people originally thought of teaching as a female thing, but now, just fyi, it's 2007, so its an "anyone who wants to" profession. Which is great, cuz some guy teachers are really good at what they do.

3.When the article states that many people think that teaching is a "female profession"; I disagree, because I think of that as kind of a steriotype, because women can do more then just teach, we can do many other things, like be a police women, or firefighter!

2. I think it's important that I have some male teachers along with female teachers because difference is always good.
3. I don't agree that teaching is a female profession because if some one wants to be a teacher regardless of gender, they should be able to teach.

1. I have about one male teacher, and that is you. All the rest im pretty sure are females.
2. I think that there should be a variety of genders. But its not really important that there has to be males. i think that the sex of the teacher does not effect anything.
3. I do not think that it is a female proffesion at all. if one is a male and has a desire to do something no matter what it is, they can go out and do it the same and even better than the opposite sex, like in this case.

1. I think i only have 2 male teachers this year.
2. I think its good to have a fair combination of male and female teachers because then students will relize even more that male and female are equal.
3. I don't agree with that because men and women can do the same things but sometimes one better than the other.
